Why do none of the band members come to Europe/Asia/wherever?

Is it because the US/Canada is big enough, they're getting old, they just don't feel they need to?

I think the only exception might be ratdog maybe doing Jamaica some time in the last couple years? Before that they came to Europe in 2002.

First and foremost; have you boarded an airplane or passed through customs since 9/11? the entire airport scene sucks, period! and it's difficult to drive tour buses across the oceans.

Not sure what the demand would be overseas these days without Garcia and the obvious draw, "The Grateful Dead". I believe there's a comfort level for "Furthur" on the road in the states and an ability to control their scene that would be difficult to duplicate in foriegn countries.

FWIW ...

Apparently Furthur got held up at the Canadian Border for an extra day last time they played in Canada at the Ottawa Blues Fest. Bob has a drug charge on his record and our brothers and sisters north of the border don't take too kindly to such transgressors.

Potential issue when travelling to other countries as well?

A recent drug charge?

I have a hard time believing that anyone in Furthur/associated groups would somehow have more issues in that regard at this stage of the game than other bands/musicians who play around the world.

Last arrest was in 1980 alongside Mickey Hart during an after-show riot.

Agreed, I don't imagine that this is the sort of thing that would be an issue when booking international tours. The concern is likely about being able to turn as nice of a profit by touring in Europe or Asia as they are able to turn here in the USA.

Because they have inexplicably failed to listen to me when I complained about it.

They even failed to pick up on my idea for Phil: Europe (at) 72. OK, he's got until next March to manage it. Maybe the problem is that I said I copywrited the idea and he's afraid to pay me my percentage.

Micah, Costa Rica hardly counts. I don't think that's even as long a plane ride as CA to the East Coast. Unless BK is still in Hawaii. In which case, he has even less of an excuse for avoiding Asia.

Billy plays in Costa Rica once a year.

Just taking the last Jam Cruise, Billy, Micky and Bobby all played (separately). Ports of call were Roatan, Honduras and Costa Maya, Mexico.

Loudon is pretty much the only act I ever see live anymore. Just saw him last week, and as usual he trucked out two or three brand new songs along with lots of the new CD, which btw sound much better live. The CD is kind of overproduced, IMHO. And he's always a riot

Nice, that you saw him on his current tour, i have yet to. I only saw him twice in the '90s. I think i have every LP up to Therapy, which is the LP that i thought his song-writing prowess drop off a bit, not to mention i did think it overproduced. I haven't delved much into anything released since Therapy, except what i've heard in live recordings. When i get my new turntable later this summer, i plan on transcribing all his '70s LPs into digital, because i'm jonesing for those big time, so many great great songs.

Either of you see any of the Rich and Loud shows (Richard Thompson w/ Louden Wainwright)? I didn't, just curious as I love 'em both.

BTW, Rufus' latest is real good. Streamed it on NPR's First Listen (where I listen to a lot of "new" releases).

No, i didn't see these shows, altho i would have loved to. I do have one or two of the recordings that i got on dime. I'm not much a fan of RT (gasp!), however, i certainly enjoy him enough to head to one of his shows if LWIII is on the bill as well. I haven't seen Loudon since '98ish at Mama Kin in Boston. In terms of Loudo's music, the songs themselves live aren't drastically different than what is on the official releases, but his banter and his storytelling, like B.Bragg, is just priceless, and worth the trip out, even if i have to deal with corporate venues to see him.

By the way, apropos not at all to the above, does your sig. other have a good recipe for garlic soup? I've tried making this myself, but i just can't seem to approach the flavour of what i had in the CR. And to anyone else reading this and thinking, eww garlic soup, i'll just say don't knock it til you've had it when prepared by those who know.

Try and find some garlic scapes. They add a little texture and have a wonderful flavor. Unless it's cream of Garlic soup and then they aren't very useful.

btw- There is a pair of gloves waiting for you.

Arb - I'll send an email later but this is my wife's reply to my email of earlier today:

"seriously? my grandma used to boil potatoes in chix broth (until soft) with lots of crushed fresh garlic, after potatoes got soft, she added fresh chopped chives, and dry fried bread cubes at the very end, so they'd not get soaked; lots of salt, no pepper. i can smell it -- bestest for hangovers."

She say's every family has their own twist, but swears her grandmother's was the best. If you know Kozel (Velkopopovicky Kozel) beer, the male goat (kozel) on the label was based on a goat at the brewery that would kick the door for beer - the grandma and great aunt worked at that pivovar (brewer).

Oh, everyone swore that their grandmother's was the best! And you know what, whenever i was invited for a meal by one of the natives, i tell you, i always swore whatever i was having was the best, ha ha. It was so often true. Please do not ever invite me out west, i'll fall in love in a split second with your wife, i can tell just by her email :)

Yes, Kozel! I drank that in copious amounts, along with Stara Brno and some other pilsner that i can't recall the name of.

You'll love the attached pik, it's right off my t-shirt, that a Czech sweetie gave me days before i left her fine country, sigh...

Drinking out of a mug with that symbol right now!

Radegast makes a really good pilsner.

Door is always open out here. Problem with my wife is that she always wants to make sure everyone has just one more nightcap...
